Only a Few Spaces Remain for September Offering
Within days of announcing the opening of its registration, the April course offering of the DAN® Diver Medical Technician (DMT) program is full. A few spaces still remain for the September class, though DAN encourages anyone interested in becoming a DMT in 2010 to register soon. A wait list for the April course has been started and unless directed otherwise, anyone left on the wait list after the April course is completed is automatically enrolled in the September course.
DMTs fulfill a unique role among divers. They serve as the critical first step in the dive medicine chain, caring for injured divers on the scene and acting as tenders in the hyperbaric chamber. DMTs also provide an alternative to the presence of qualified hyperbaric physicians at every dive site, responding to emergency medical situations, managing the situation and communicating effectively with DAN and physicians in remote locations.
To participate in the DAN DMT program, candidates must hold current EMT-B or higher certification and be experienced divers (leadership-level preferred).
The DAN DMT course offers lectures presented by internationally known faculty, hands-on practical skills and the experience gained through more than 40 hours of classroom, lab and experience at local hyperbaric facilities. Lecture topics include: the role and responsibilities of the DMT; review of gas laws; gas toxicities; the ears and sinuses; otoscope use; decompression sickness (DCS); physical exams and invasive and noninvasive procedures. The DAN DMT course is certified by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology as a Module 16 program.
Registration for the September class can be completed online; for additional information on the September class or to be placed on the April course wait list, contact DAN Education at (919) 684-2948 or oxygen@diversalertnetwork.org.
